Although it may still seem like a new concept, Airbnb has hosted over 500m guests since its launch back in 2008.
It is a slightly more unconventional alternative to a hotel, meaning that your travel insurance provider might have something to say in the unfortunate case that you need to make a claim.
Always read your insurance policies carefully, and take note of Bobatoo’s top tips below on getting the right cover for your Airbnb vacation!
What is Airbnb? – How does it work?
Airbnb is a host website for anybody wishing to rent out a room, house, boat, igloo or even a lighthouse – and the list goes on!
Airbnb acts as a broker for all of the properties and events listed on its website, receiving a commission for each booking made.
Does travel insurance cover Airbnb?
Generally, yes – you shouldn’t need dedicated Airbnb insurance.
Most travel insurance providers provide cover for privately rented accommodation, which your stay in an Airbnb would fall under. This means that you will be covered for any cancellations, your personal belongings and personal liability.
But as is the case when staying at a hotel, the responsibility of being sensible is still on your shoulders. Make sure that any expensive items are out of clear sight, kept in a locked room or safe when you aren’t there, and your insurer will be much more understanding of your claim.
If you damage a host’s property, you will be covered up to a pre-determined amount by the personal liability cover included in your travel insurance policy.
TIP: If you’re looking at staying in a room within a house, check if the door has a working lock before booking!
What is the Airbnb cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel your stay for whatever reason, don’t be too hasty on claiming on your travel insurance – you might already be covered by Airbnb.
Your chosen host is able to select a cancellation policy, typically ranging from ‘flexible’ to ‘strict’. The more lenient cancellation policies will allow you to receive a full refund on your Airbnb stay as long as you cancel at least 24 hours before your scheduled check-in time (or 3pm if it isn’t stated). Cancel after then and the first night will be non-refundable, but you’ll still get the rest back.
Airbnb will issue you a full refund in the event of a host cancellation.
Airbnb travel insurance in Europe and beyond
You might just be renting an Airbnb in London or Edinburgh, in which case your medical expenses will be covered by the NHS.
But Airbnb offer accommodation globally, so if instead you’re looking for an Airbnb in Amsterdam, Paris or Barcelona, then it will be crucial for you to have the right travel insurance policy in place.
Travel insurance would cover your medical expenses if you were to end up needing medication or hospital treatment up to a pre-determined cost, so read through your travel insurance policy before committing – the last thing you need is to be stranded in Europe with a broken leg and a medical bill just as long!
Comprehensive travel insurance packages, such as those offered by Admiral, will also cover the costs of getting you home if your accident causes you to miss your flight or cut your trip short.
How do I contact Airbnb?
Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t pay out on lack of enjoyment if you aren’t happy with the quality of your stay, or if you feel that you have been misled by pictures online.
If this is the case, your best option is to take it up with Airbnb directly through the Airbnb app or website.
Whether you’re staying in an Airbnb in the UK or one of the other 190+ countries that they operate in, having travel insurance is an absolute must.
