You might find that your bike is covered under your home insurance policy, but some home insurance providers will have specific terms and conditions in place in order for your claim to qualify under the home insurance policy.

What exactly does bike insurance cover?

Bicycle insurance doesn’t just cover your bike, it can also cover you in the event of accidents and damages as well. Take a look at some of the things that you’ll be covered for under your bicycle insurance policy.

    Cover for your bike:

    • Damages to your bike - whether it was accidental or intentional damage, your bike insurance policy will cover the cost of any necessary repairs or placements that your bike requires as a result of it being damaged or vandalised.
    • Theft - your bike will be covered up to a certain amount if it is stolen. This type of cover sometimes also includes accessories and personal possessions that were attached to your bike.
    • Bike hire replacement - if your bike is being fixed or replaced, this will cover the cost of hiring another bike for you to use during this time.

    Cover for you:

    • Third-party cycling liability insurance - this will cover the cost of any claims that are made against you when using your bike, such as hitting a pedestrian.
    • Personal accident cover - if you suffer from an injury such as loss of sight or hearing, or if you lose a limb, become paralysed or even die while using your bike, this will cover you for those eventualities.
    • Legal claims - if a third party decides to take you to court as a result of damages caused by an accident, this will cover the cost of court and legal fees.

It’s also worth noting that you will likely have to pay an excess fee if you claim on your bicycle insurance. The amount of excess that you’ll be liable to pay will depend on factors such as where you left your bike when it was stolen, or if you leave it unattended at a certain time of day.

    Optional extras for bike cover

As well as the things that you’ll be covered for above, you can also choose to add optional extras to your bike insurance to ensure that you’re fully covered and protected.

    • Cover for taking your bicycle abroad
    • Bicycle breakdown cover
    • Extra cover for use in competitions
    • Cover for extended accessories

    What is not covered?

Unfortunately, just like with any type of insurance, there are several things that aren’t covered under bike insurance. Your insurance probably won’t be valid if:

    • You’re involved in an accident while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
    • You use your bike for monetary reasons, such as being a courier
    • You cannot give proof that you own the bike
    • You didn’t secure your bike properly and it resulted in theft
    • There are any damages to accessories that aren’t an essential part of the bike
    • There are any cosmetic damages such as scratches and dents that do not prevent the bike from working

How much is bicycle insurance in the UK?

Bicycle insurance is often considered to be quite an expensive type of insurance and the main reason for this is that you’re thought to be more at risk while on a bike.

In some cases, bicycle insurance can be even more expensive than car insurance and that’s because insurers deem you to be more at risk of being involved in accidents, so if anything happened, they would be liable to pay out a large amount of money, which means policies are often quite expensive.

Things that affect the cost of bicycle insurance

    • How much your bike is worth
    • Is it a traditional, mountain or an electric bike
    • Where you live
    • Any previous claims that you have made
    • The use and purpose of your bike

    Is bike insurance worth getting?

Bike insurance is worth getting if you’re an avid biker who values their bicycle. If you only use your bike a couple of times a year, it might not be worth getting an insurance policy for it as you’re unlikely to benefit from all the things that a policy will cover you for.

However, if you have an expensive bicycle, then you may want to take out a specific bike insurance policy to ensure that it’s covered for things like theft and damage.
