The make and model of your car can make a big difference to not just the amount of money you can sell it for, but how long it might take to sell it. A new study has identified what the most popular – and fastest-selling – used cars are.

If you’ve ever tried to sell you car then you know that it can be a bit of a frustrating process at times – so anything that can make the whole thing as simple and painless as possible would be a good thing.

While picking a car based purely on how quickly and easily it might be sold on in the future isn’t advised, it is a factor that should inform your decision – as new research from automotive data experts CAP HPI has highlighted the huge discrepancies in how quickly, or slowly, certain models of used cars are sold.

The data boffins at CAP HPI crunched the numbers to identify the most popular used cars in fourteen different categories, from city cars (small hatchbacks) to sports cars, convertibles and even electric cars.

Their research, which is based on the number of used cars that are advertised for sale in the UK and how long each model was listed for. found that some of the most popular used cars have an average sales period of just two days.

They found that the Fiat 500 Hatchback is the fastest selling used car in the ‘city car’ category, while the Ford Fiesta – the UK’s best-selling car – came out as the fastest-selling ‘supermini’.

If you’re looking for a new convertible that should be easy to sell-on, then the BMW 3 Series Convertible looks to be your best bet. For electric cars, the Vauxhall Amera is the quickest to sell, and the Audi TT came out top in the sports car category.

Philip Nothard, consumer and retail specialist at CAP HPI, said of their research findings: “Looking at the data from the number of used cars advertised in the UK we are able to identify the best-selling makes and models and how quickly they are being snapped up.

“The key positive for the used market to take from this is that there is strong appetite for used vehicles, particularly convertibles, executives, lower medium cars, MPVs, Superminis and SUVs, with an average selling period of just two days.”
