Van insurance

Do I need business van insurance?

It is a legal requirement for all vehicles on the road to have valid UK insurance. The Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) policy means that it is against the law for vehicles to not be insured, even if your van is not in use. It could be parked up at your business premises getting rusty, but it still needs some form of van insurance.

The only scenario where you wouldn’t need insurance for your van is if you have declared it as “off-road” at the DVLA applied for a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN).

Whether your business only has one van, or uses a fleet of commercial vehicles, you need to arrange a business van insurance policy.

Commercial van insurance can come in many different forms, with various cover options available depending on the type of business and what the vans are used for.

You can find specialist insurance for a range of different business types, including:

  • Tradesman insurance
  • Builders insurance
  • Carpenters insurance
  • Painters and decorators insurance
  • Handyman insurance
  • Cleaners insurance
  • Couriers insurance
  • Ice cream van insurance

What to consider when buying business van insurance

Although having a lot of choice is a good one, it can mean that finding the right business van insurance policy feels complicated.

It is therefore important to spend some time assessing your individual business needs in relation to what cover you actually need.

Some of the more important considerations are:

  • The type of van(s) your business uses
  • What they are used for
  • How frequently they are used
  • What security features they have (alarms, immobilisers, anti-theft locks etc…)
  • What drivers have to be named on the policy, and their driving history
  • Where the van is kept overnight

All of these play a big part in how much your van insurance premiums will cost, so it is important that you work out exactly what your requirements are and what cover your business needs.

For example, some business van insurance policies might come with van breakdown cover included, whereas for others it is an options extra. It may be cheaper to get the policy that doesn’t include breakdown cover, but if keeping your van on the road is critical to your business then it might work out better to get breakdown cover included.

Some of the policy extras you can expect to be included in a comprehensive business van insurance include:

  • Accidental damage
  • Malicious damage
  • Tools cover
  • Windscreen damage
  • Uninsured driver guarantee
  • Personal accident cover
  • Medical expenses
  • Personal belongings cover
  • Vehicle replacement / courtesy van
  • Roadside repairs
  • Minimum EU cover

You can also find policies with a range of optional extras to further protect your business. Some of the more common policy extras include:

  • Protected No-Claims Bonus
  • Van breakdown cover
  • Guaranteed hire vehicle
  • Motor legal protection
  • Van trailer cover

All of these are important considerations to make, as they all have the potential to harm your business if the appropriate cover is not in place. So always compare business van insurance quotes from a range of different insurance companies to make sure you get the cover you actually need.

Do I need business van insurance with ‘any driver’?

One of the most common questions business owners have with regards to van insurance is whether they need to get a policy that allows for any drivers.

If your business relies on several different employees to drive a van, you will need to get a business van insurance policy that provides cover for more than one driver.

An ‘any driver’ van insurance policy provides more flexibility that just arranging cover for an individual driver, as any driver that is named on the policy can drive your van.

You can typically insure up to four named drivers on an any driver van policy, but there are more specialist policies that allow for more.

You should be aware that choosing to cover several different drivers on a van insurance policy will mean the premiums cost more than if your were just insuring one driver, however an any driver policy will more than likely work out cheaper and easier to manage than sorting out separate policies for each different driver.

How to get cheap business van insurance

First of all, if you have an any driver business van insurance policy, then consider both the age and the driving history of your named drivers.

As with all forms of motor insurance, young drivers tend to attract higher premiums as they are statistically more likely to be involved in accidents and to make a claim. So if you are including drivers aged under 25 with limited driving experience you can expect slightly higher premiums.

Also, be clear about exactly what the vans are used for while arranging your policy as this can affect the price. For instance, a van that is used to transport tools and work materials to and from a site will have a different premium cost than if it used to transport goods (‘hire and reward’).

Other actions you can take to reduce the cost of business van insurance include:

  • Choosing a higher voluntary excess
  • Use the right size of van for the job – bigger vans tend to be more expensive to insure
  • Park your van(s) securely overnight – locked garage, off-street etc…
  • Invest in van security to make it less likely to be stolen
  • Don’t pay for any policy features your business doesn’t need
