Do you need caravan insurance?
Whether you own a static caravan, a touring caravan that you tow behind your car or a motorhome or campervan, it is important that you have the right insurance cover in place.
It’s not a legal requirement to have insurance for a touring caravan, but it’s certainly a good idea to consider arranging a policy. Caravan’s can be very expensive, so it’s important to have insurance in place in case it gets damaged or stolen.
Usually your car insurance will extend to your towed caravan in terms of your third party liability, however it is often the case that you will need to inform you car insurance company that you intend to tow a caravan when you arrange your car insurance policy or when you buy the caravan. If you fail to do this then your policy could become invalid when it comes to making a claim.
It is also not mandatory that you arrange insurance for your static caravan, but it is very common for owners to arrange a policy to cover the static caravan and the contents.
What does caravan insurance cover?
Caravan insurance is pretty much a mixture of car insurance and home insurance, and as such the policy features and cover options available to you reflect this.
For the most part, caravan owners choose to cover their caravan against damage – whether that is caused by criminal damage, fire, extreme weather or anything else.
As you caravan tends to become a home away from home, it is also common to insure the contents – just like you do at home. The contents of a caravan can be quite expensive, so it’s worth looking into arrange a policy to cover them against damage or theft.
Common caravan insurance policy exclusions
Although all caravan insurance companies offer slightly different policy terms and cover options, caravan insurance tends to not include the following:
- Wear and tear damage
- Damage caused during the use of the caravan as your permanent residence, or for professional/business purposes
- Damage caused by insect or vermin infestation
- Damage or loss of personal possessions due to inadequate security measures (i.e. not locking doors or leaving windows open)
How to get cheap caravan insurance
Like all insurance policies, the key to getting a cheap caravan insurance quote is to shop around and compare quotes from as many suppliers as possible. However, it’s sometimes important to also think about the level of cover you require rather than just looking for the cheapest.
Our advice is to first of all decide on exactly what cover you need for your caravan (i.e. just new for old replacement cover, contents cover included, accidental damage covered as standard etc…) and then compare all the quotes that include the cover you are looking for.
How to make your caravan more secure
You can also reduce the price of your insurance premiums by making sure your caravan is as safe and secure as possible. Common ways to do this include:
- Using a wheel clamp on your caravan when it is not in use
- Fitting a hitch lock to the tow bar when not in use
- Installing a Thatcham-approved alarm
- Installing a tag or tracker
- Fit security tags and use corner steady locks to lock down the rear corner of touring caravans
