Can you buy car insurance for 1 hour?

If you only need cover for a quick trip, then it is possible to buy car insurance for just one hour. You can get the same flexible, comprehensive cover you would get from standard daily or weekly car insurance, but for just one specified hour.

With hourly car insurance, you can choose the number of hours you need cover for, which typically goes from 1 – 12 hours. If you need cover for any more than 12 hours you will need to buy one day car insurance.

What are the benefits of hourly car insurance?

Buying hourly car insurance offers a range of benefits compared to standard, long-term policies:

  • You get comprehensive cover. With most temporary car insurance providers, comprehensive cover comes as standard. This means you are protected for a wide range of risks – with possibly more cover than some annual policies provide.
  • You only pay for the cover you need. Hourly car insurance lets you set a definite start and end time, from just one hour up to 12 hours. This means you have full control over how much cover you are paying for.
  • There’s no long-term commitment. When you take out your policy you specify when you want it to end. You will then be sent your insurance certificate and other documents and you’re free to drive. When the policy expires, it’s all done with – you don’t need to do anything and there are no further charges.
  • Your no claims discount is protected. Because the hourly car insurance policy is totally separate from any other policy, the no claims discount is protected. This makes it a great alternative to being added as a named driver on someone else’s policy.

Who is eligible for hourly car insurance?

Hourly car insurance is typically available for all drivers, although depending on the insurance company there might be some conditions and criteria you have to meet.

You can typically expect to be eligible for hourly car insurance if you:

  • Are aged between 17 and 79
  • Have had a full UK driving licence for a minimum of 6 months, or
  • Have had a full EU licence for a minimum of 12 months
  • Have had no more than 7 penalty points in the last 3 years
  • Have not been disqualified from driving in the last 5 years

As well as this, the vehicle you wished to be insured to drive must:

  • Be in a roadworthy condition with a current and valid MOT (unless you are buying the insurance policy to take the vehicle to get an MOT)
  • Be taxed (unless you are using the insurance policy to obtain tax for the vehicle immediately after purchase)

There may also be certain conditions where you will not be eligible for hourly car insurance. These could include:

  • If the car has been modified in any way (except for modifications designed to aid disabled drivers)
  • If the car is left-hand drive
  • If you want the insurance in order to recover an impounded vehicle
  • If the car has more than 8 seats
  • If the vehicle is declared as SORN
