Medical bills soar to more than £200 MILLION for British holidaymakers

Close up the sand and sea

Travellers are being reminded about the importance of travel insurance as medical bills reach an astonishing £209 million – the highest figure recorded since 2011.

Statistics from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) suggest that a UK holidaymaker requires emergency medical attention every 3 minutes, with 153,000 British travellers turning to their travel insurance for help in the past year – that’s the equivalent of 420 people every single day.

Despite this worrying stat, the ABI also state that just 20% of Brits take out travel insurance when they go on holiday, risking potential bills of hundreds-and-thousands of pounds – last year, a UK resident claimed for more than £240,000 after suffering heart problems in the US, while a brain haemorrhage victim in China was reimbursed with the best part of £200,000.

Do I need travel insurance?

If the above statistics aren’t enough to encourage you to get travel insurance, then Bobatoo’s not sure what is – perhaps the fact that the average travel insurance policy clocks up at less than £40?

While your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will give you access to cheap, and sometimes free healthcare and medication across Europe, it should not be seen as an alternative to travel insurance and will not offer you the same, comprehensive cover.

Besides, depending on the outcome of the ongoing Brexit saga, there is a likelihood that your EHIC will soon be invalid.

You should also consider purchasing a travel insurance policy when enjoying an increasingly popular ‘staycation’, where you holiday on British shores.

What does travel insurance cover?

The cover provided by your travel insurance will vary depending on your chosen policy.

Bobatoo offer quotes on a wide range of travel insurance policies, including over 50s, backpacker, cruise and family travel insurance.

Some examples of expenses which have been covered by travel insurance in the past year include:

  • Medical expenses (52% of claim costs)
  • Cancellation costs (36% of claim costs)
  • Lost luggage/money (4% of claim costs)

Some of the other expenses that can be covered by travel insurance include the cost of missed flights and further accommodation in the event of a medical emergency, and legal costs if you are involved in an accident which isn’t your fault.

Bob’s Tip

What travel insurance documents do I need to take with me?

Bob’s expert team suggest that you take a copy of your UK driving licence, your passport, your credit card and your EHIC. Also note down the relevant phone number for your insurance company, and keep a copy of your policy confirmation either in paper or saved in your emails!

What travel insurance do I need?

Depending on the nature of your holiday and what you are taking with you, you might have to make a few alterations to your travel insurance policy.

For example, if you are going away for a relaxing fortnight in Majorca then the chances are your travel insurance will be fairly basic. However, if you’re taking your £2,000 MacBook, £1,000 iPhone and £800 digital camera along with you, you may want to pay a little extra to increase your cover for individual items.

Another example is if you are going on a more adventurous holiday, like a skiing trip. In this case, you will need to buy a travel insurance policy tailored to your specific holiday, as a standard policy normally excludes cover for injuries sustained while partaking in an ‘extreme sport’.
