The 7 best car seats of 2020

Safety, security and comfort are important traits for many things in life (and even life itself), but they are also key qualities of the best children’s car seats.

Here, we rank the best car seats of 2020 that are available in the UK, with consideration for both quality and price.

#1 – Maxi-Cosi Titan Toddler/Child Car Seat (£199.89)

Maxi-Cosi Titan child car seat

Pros:

  • Suitable from 9 months to 12 years
  • Easily adjustable headrest
  • Multiple recline positions

Cons:

  • Difficult to move from car to car
  • Must be installed using ISOFIX points

This Maxi-Cosi car seat is designed to accommodate children up to 12 years old meaning that you’re unlikely to ever need to buy another car seat again.

Its anticipated longevity means that there are a number of additional comfort features included in the design of the seat, including an adjustable headrest, padded baby inlay and multi-recline system which optimises your child’s leg room at all ages.

Once your child reaches 18kg (around 4 years old) you can remove the 5-point safety harness to transform the Maxi-Cosi Titan into a high-backed booster seat. At £199 this isn’t the cheapest option on our list, but given how long it lasts, we think it’s worth the investment.

#2 – Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix Baby Car Seat (£99.99)

Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix baby car seat

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Reasonably priced
  • Extra comfortable head support
  • Can be used with or without Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix Base
  • Fits most buggies

Cons:

  • Extra cost for Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix Base is optional, but recommended for ease of use

The Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix car seat is designed for babies aged between 0-12 months and is one of the best-rated car seats on the market in 2019.

Its side protection system improves the overall safety of the seat while the extra padding around the head and neck areas ensure maximum comfort for your child both in the car and on the go.

It can be installed by using a standard car seat belt, however it is recommended that you invest in a Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix base to make the most of the Click & Go installation and additional ease of use.

The seat slots easily into all Maxi-Cosi and Quinny pushchairs, but is also compatible with most other brands.

#3 – Cybex Gold Pallas S-Fix Car Seat (£199)

Cybex Gold Pallas child car seat

Pros:

  • Suitable from 9 months to 12 years
  • Optimised impact shield reduces risk of neck injury
  • Exclusive adjustable reclining headrest prevents head from tilting forward while sleeping
  • Can be installed with ISOFIX or standard seat belt

Cons:

  • Some customers have raised concerns over security of using an impact shield instead of a traditional harness system
  • Expensive

Unlike most traditional car seats, the Cybex Gold Pallas S-Fix car seat features what they call an ‘adjustable impact shield’ instead of a traditional harness. This shield is said to maximise comfort for younger children while providing optimal safety – some parents have raised concerns over this innovative safety system, but it passes all strict UK regulations.

The seat can be converted to meet the requirements of children aged between 9 months and 12 years, with older children benefiting from a patented adjustable reclining headset designed to prevent their heads from tilting forwards when taking that much-needed power nap.

Combined with a built-in LSP (Linear Side Impact) protection system, this Cybex car seat is a safe, secure and smart option for children growing out of the new-born phase.

When to use booster seats - car seat laws

Car seat height and weight guidelines suggest that children should use car seats until they are at least 12 years old (or 135cm tall). Children cannot use a backless booster seat until they are over 125cm tall.

#4 – Cosatto Zoomi Car Seat (£79.95)

Cosatto Zoomi child car seat

Pros:

  • Wacky and fun designs are more appealing to children
  • Suitable for ages 9 months to 12 years
  • 4-year guarantee
  • Cheaper than others

Cons:

  • Designs could go out of fashion for older children

The Cosatto Zoomi car seat range has designs that all young children will love, making it that little bit easier to get them strapped in mid-tantrum! From the Dino Mighty to Magic Unicorns, these designs are sure to be a hit with your younger children, but might become ‘uncool’ as they get a little older.

Nevertheless, the ‘awesomely adjustable’ design means that this seat can be transformed into a high back booster seat in seconds and should last your child up until they are old enough to travel without a car seat.

With padded armrests and chest pads their comfort is never compromised, while the 5-point security harness with layers of padding ensure that they are always kept safe and secure.

The Cosatto Zoomi car seat can be installed in any car with a standard seat belt and, for just under £100, is excellent value for money.

#5 – Maxi-Cosi Axiss Toddler Car Seat (£180)

Maxi-Cosi Axiss toddler car seat

Pros:

  • Swivels 90° allowing easy front-on access for getting your child in and out of the car
  • Suitable for ages 9 months to 4 years
  • 8 comfortable recline positions
  • Seat belt fastener system gives extra security

Cons:

  • Car must support a top tether for installation

The Maxi-Cosi Axiss toddler car seat features a clever design which allows you front-on access to your child when strapping them in and getting them out of the car.

And while the ability to rotate clearly steals the show here, it shouldn’t go without mentioning that the built-in seat belt tensioner goes a long way in providing your child with additional security by tightening the belt after installation. The seat has multiple recline positions and an easy-to-adjust harness and headrest.

There is no ISOFIX compatibility with this seat, meaning that it is easy to move from car to car if needed – currently less than £160 on Amazon.

#6 – Cybex Sirona S I-Size Car Seat (£299.95)

Cybex Sirona child car seat

Pros:

  • 360° rotation allows for both rear and forward-facing position
  • Easy to install
  • Suitable for children from birth up to 4 years

Cons:

  • Heavy
  • Expensive

A second entry for Cybex on our list, the Sirona S I-Size rotating car seat is the perfect choice for your child’s early years. Its standout feature is the ability to rotate 360°, allowing easier access for parents getting their child both in and out of the seat. This swivel car seat also has an adjustable headrest and a removable newborn insert, allowing the seat to grow with the child.

The car seat’s intelligent design provides optimum legroom for even taller children and also comes with a memory-foam-style padding to maximise comfort.

The LSP (Linear Side-Impact Protection) safety system reduces the force felt upon impact by 25%, while the easy and safe ISOFIX installation also provides extra security.

#7 – Cybex Silver Solution X-Fix Car Seat (£145)

Mothercare Palma high back booster seat

Pros:

  • Good value
  • Suitable for children aged 3-12 years old
  • 11-way adjustable headrest
  • Easy installation with seatbelt or ISOFIX fitting

Cons:

  • No adjustable impact protection

The last car seat on this list (but by no means the least!) is the Cybex Silver Solution X-Fix, designed for children aged between 3 and 12 years old.

With an 11-way adjustable headrest to maximise comfort as your child grows taller, this high back booster comes with a basic design, meaning it is unlikely to go out of date or fashion as your child grows up. The headrest also reclines to ensure that, when sleeping in the car, your child’s head does not tilt forward.

The main negative is that, unlike some alternatives, this car seat does not come with adjustable impact protection, which is a useful addition offering greater safety in the event of a crash.

Child car seat insurance – replace your car seat

If you are involved in a car accident, you may need to replace your child’s car seat (even if it wasn’t serious, it might have been weakened upon impact).

Some comprehensive car insurance policies will pay up to a specified amount to replace your car seats, but you shouldn’t assume that this is the case (1 in 4 don’t!) – contact your insurer to see if your policy includes adequate car seat insurance.

You should also check if your car seats are covered against vehicle theft, and whether a claim for replacement car seats will affect your no-claims bonus.
